Website terminology explained

Quite often when speaking to a website designer, you'll be bombarded with techno-babble (words that have absolutely no meaning to you!).

Here at bitingedge, we spell things out in plain english. Even so, a little knowledge goes a long way, and we'd like to share this with you.

URL - Uniform Resource Locator
The address of a website, also known as a domain name e.g. www.bitingedge.co.uk

FTP - File Transfer Protocol.
Utilised by programs to transfer files from one computer to another.

Spiders / robots
Computer programs that visit websites keeping search engines up to date. Google has GoogleBot, Yahoo has Slurp and MSN has MSNBot.

Hypertext Links
Highlighted or underlined words and images on a website that link to another website page or file.

CSS - Cascading Style Sheets

HTML - Hyper Text Markup Language

HTTP - Hyper Text Transfer Protocol

ASP - Active Server Pages

SEO - Search Engine Optimisation

XML - Extensible Markup Language

RSS - Really Simple Syndication
